OUR STORY

The FELDENKRAIS for Business ™ Method began to evolve in 2016, under the supervision of Garet Newell, Director of the Feldenkrais Educational ITC Center in England, the author of the book (picture below) which lined out the basic guidelines for the FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method. In 2018, Lucija Zmajšek used the information in the book to create basic guidelines for the FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method. At the beginning of 2019, the Faculty of Sport, at the University of Ljubljana, conducted an independent study of effects of the Method on employees, of one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical company Lek. The results showed significant improvements, both in the area of movement and cognitive abilities, as well as in the psychological field of overcoming stress and burnout. More about our story is available in gallery below.

1. THE BEGINNINGS

The pioneer of the Method is Garet Newell, who, after graduating at Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais in 1994, became one of the first FM trainers in Europe and the first in the UK. Garet now works in England as the Director of the Feldenkrais International Training Center. In her book The Feldenkrais Method for Executive Coaches, Managers, and Business Leaders, she had applied her 30 years of experience to create a series of Awareness Through Movement lessons for use in business. This has led to develop a new Method designed exclusively for the business world.

2. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AND SPECIALIZATION

After successfully completing four years of study of the Feldenkrais Method in Vienna, Lucija Zmajšek had the idea to create the FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method under the mentoring of Garet Newel. She put together a team in Slovenia, responsible for further Method development. Lucija is the only teacher specialised in the FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method in Slovenia. Lucija and Garet are developing ways to further integrate the Method into the business world and expand it globally.

3. DR. MOSHE FELDENKRAIS

The Feldenkrais Method is at the leading edge of the emerging field of somatic treatment and education. Based on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) and influenced by his expertise in physics, engineering and judo, the Method draws together the art and science of human movement. Feldenkrais understood that patterns of everyday action and posture reflect the thinking, perceiving, emotional life and self-image of the individual. A lack of awareness of these patterns leads to habits that can limit potential and leads to problems in both mental and physical health. As Feldenkrais so aptly put it »when you know what you can do, you can do what you want«. The Feldenkrais Method is unique in that it is based on sound mechanical and neurological principles yet is easily accessible through simple and practical lessons. The Method is both experiential and educational. Feldenkrais was a keen observer of the organic learning of babies and young children. He recreated the curiosity of the child – excited by learning and discovering new abilities – in an endless variety of lessons. The Feldenkrais Method has a broad range of applications – it can improve the skills of professionals in fields, such as theatre, dance, music and sports; it can facilitate recovery from injuries, operations or other trauma; it can reduce chronic tension and pain; it can help the senior citizen remain mobile, flexible and independent and it is also a valuable tool for children with neurological or learning difficulties.

4. TRADE MARK

In 2018, after careful consideration, we have launched a new brand, Feldenkrais for Business ™, under which all further activities are now underway. The brand emphasises that the new Method is based on the Feldenkrais Method, while being specially adapted to the specific needs of the business world.

5. INDEPENDENT STUDY OF METHOD EFFICIENCY PERFORMED

In 2019, the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Sport, conducted an independent pilot study of the effectiveness of the FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method in corporate environment. The 3-month study was conducted at a leading pharmaceutical company Lek. More than 90 employees participated in the project. Lessons were held twice a week. The study was formulated by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Sports, before the beginning and after the end of the program. The analysis of the results of the study showed a statistical increase in both physical and cognitive abilities of the participants, and significant progress was shown in coping with stress and burnout and improved motivation.

6. FELDENKRAIS for Business™ METHOD TODAY

Today we can say with much confidence that FELDENKRAIS for Business™ is a unique Method designed to address specific issues of the business world. It is one of a few, if not the only, Method that can be easily performed at the workplace, during work time in business clothes. It is the Method whose positive benefits for employees and company were confirmed and proven by scientific research done by an independent institution.
At the core, Method is divided into Individual lessons (Functional Integration – FI), Group Lessons – (Awareness Through Movement – ATM) and Targeting Lessons (Targeting Functional Integration – TFI) focused on specific area suitable for one-off events.

In 2020 and 2021, our main task is to promote and expand the Method: training for new teachers of FELDENKRAIS for Business™ Method has been formulated and additional pilot projects with companies will be conducted, together with more detailed scientific studies.
